Catalytic Converters
Last Update: December 20, 2024
A catalytic converter is used to reduce emissions from internal combustion engines. They work by regulating three harmful compounds: Hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides – and converting them into less toxic compounds such as carbon dioxide, water vapor, and nitrogen gas. They are found in most vehicles and need to be replaced about every 74,500 miles. Autosaver88 offers catalytic converters for all major brands at highly competitive prices.
It’s uncommon for catalytic converters to fail. Over time, however, they do clog up. A problem is most likely due to external damage caused while driving the vehicle or even chemical products such as antifreeze. A clear indication of a problem is your fuel consumption. If your catalytic converter has failed, you should notice a decrease in your fuel economy. A second sign is a drop in power due to increased backpressure and even stalling while driving. In addition, converters can also be damaged by a faulty exhaust valve on the engine. So, it is essential to find the cause of the problem to avoid recurrence.

How to replace a catalytic converter?
If you are having trouble with your catalytic converter, it’s easy to replace it. The catalytic converter is a large metal box located on the car’s underside. There are two pipes connected to it. One of these pipes introduces the exhaust gases from the engine, while the other is connected to the exhaust and releases the converted gas. You can buy a new catalytic converter online – from there; it’s just a few simple steps.
You will need space to replace the catalytic converter. Lift your vehicle off the ground using ramps or a jack.
- Make sure to do this on level ground; otherwise, it can be a safety hazard.
- Allow the engine to cool completely before attempting to touch it.
- Read the vehicle’s manual. Familiarise yourself with the appearance of the catalytic converter and how it is connected to the car. Consult a professional before disassembling it.
- Locate the catalytic converter. It should be located in the center of the exhaust system.
- Locate the O² sensor and disconnect it – you will need an O² wrench. Depending on the model, you may also need to remove the pipes connecting the O² sensor to the catalytic converter.
- Remove the bolts that secure the catalytic converter; first, the bolts at the vehicle’s rear, then the front ones. They may be rusted and difficult to remove.
- If the catalytic converter has been repaired before, it may have been welded in. In this case, contact a professional.
- Install the new converter. How this is done depends on the model. In this case, always refer to the instructions.
